On silkworms...

What is a silkworm?

Silkworms used to be 'fad' with schoolkids in the eighties and nineties. They look like little grubs, and munch on mulberry leaves. Usually they were kept in shoeboxes because they like dark, moist environments.

In the beginning...

'The Running Man' starts off in an eerie way. What do you think of the metaphor of the silkworm thread? The idea of the silkworm thread is that it somehow binds Tom Lleyton and Joseph together.

A metaphor is when we give one object the qualities of another.

1. A figure of speech in which a word or phrase that ordinarily designates one thing is used to designate another, thus making an implicit comparison, as in “a sea of troubles” or “All the world's a stage” (Shakespeare).

2. One thing conceived as representing another; a symbol: “Hollywood has always been an irresistible, prefabricated metaphor for the crass, the materialistic, the shallow, and the craven” (Neal Gabler).
